One Crazy Mother Test Notes

Green Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Our moms loved the cool and crisp bottle design. One called it “Clorox Metro.” On a scale of 1-10, it tackled our toilets at about a 6. The smell was clean. B+ but an A for effort.

Green Works Glass Cleaner: The Green Works Glass Cleaner worked as well as most “unnatural” glass cleaners which was great. Our moms loved how Clorox states what percentage of ingredients are natural on the website and were pleased to see that the glass cleaner seems safe to use around the kids. A-

Green Works All-Purpose Cleaner: Our Green Works All-Purpose Cleaner worked well. It cleaned up spills and messes on counter tops but couldn’t quite handle the grease of the stove top. The smell was very nice and reminded us of retro-Clorox. A-

Green Works Tub and Tile Cleaner: Clean bathrooms all around! Clorox knows how to clean bathrooms, even when its doing it without harmful chemicals. The scent was loo-appropriate and the formula was strong enough to make the tile sparkle. A+

Overall: We love that Clorox is cleaning up it’s act with the Green Works line. Can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

It’s no longer the dingo that’s threatening to eat your baby, it’s the millions of chemicals you are exposing your kid to everyday.

We all know that “green is in” but so is having a clean house and who has time to make an all-natural solution of vinegar and lemon juice everyday (unless it’s for drinks). One Crazy Mother is stepping up to help the millions of women who want to know what works and what doesn’t.

Introducing: The Cleaning Green Challenge

Our Mom Test Panel are going to give us the down and dirty on cleaning green. Over the next three weeks they’ll be trying products from method Home, Seventh Generation, and Clorox Green Works. Read their notes. A big bow to these three companies for agreeing to take part in the challenge and sending out tons of product!

The One Crazy Mother test panel will be using and abusing All Purpose Cleaner, Tub and Tile Cleaner, Toilet Bowl Cleaner (sucks, but someone has to do it), and Glass Cleaner from all three companies. Each week, a different company’s products will be used and graded.

At the end of the challenge winners will be placed in the following categories:

Best Scent
Most Likely to Succeed
Best Dressed
Gentlest Formula
Most Committed to Being Green
Easiest to Use

The challenge began Monday, May 9th. This week: Clorox Green Works! Can the big guys do green?

In this month’s blog I wrote a contest that we’re doing with OnTrack, a northern California company that I credit for breaking my Fruit Roll-Up dependency.

I’ve chosen not to start drinking coffee, even though I could use the energy, because I don’t trust myself to use the substance responsibly. Instead I look for energy sources for my daughter and myself in good foods. That’s why I can’t wait for two Crazy Mothers to try OnTrack and tell me how they like it!

Contest Info:
On Track wants to give two lucky Crazy Mothers an assortment of their nutritional energy bars! You’ll get a bunch of Mixed Berry, Peaches and Cream, Strawberry Banana, and Cherry Chocolate Fudge (so good). All you have to do is email One Crazy Mother between today and Friday, July 18th and answer the following question:

What would you do with a little extra energy?

One Crazy Mother Test Notes

Emerald Cypress and Fir Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Our moms loved the cleaning power of the toilet bowl cleaner. The scent was original- some moms preferred more traditional smells while others were totally into the bay leaf-meets-wild forest scent.

Ruby Grapefruit & Herb Glass Cleaner: The Test Mom Panel were split on this item too. One panel member didn’t like the scent and saw streaks. Another mom loved the herb-y aroma and thought her windows looked better than ever! To each her own, we think, in terms of Seventh Generation product scents. They’re so unique and don’t smell like traditional cleaners. A bonus is that all of the products come in a “Free and Clear” option with no scent at all for the extremely sensitive.

Green Mandarin & Leaf All-Purpose Cleaner: This was a definite favorite! Our Test Mom panel absolutely loved how this all-purpose cleaner swept away grease, spots, and stains. This is a must-try! Most of our Test Mom Panel have already used half of this product in one week- floors, walls…it works well on any surface. A++

Emerald Cypress & Fir Tub and Tile Cleaner: Another winner! This natural product actually blasted through mildew (something many natural products can’t do). Our panel loved the scent and how they didn’t feel woozy while cleaning the bathroom. A+

Overall: Seventh Generation knows how to clean. The packaging isn’t space age and snazzy and the scents may drive the sensitive away (that’s where Free and Clear comes in), but we love how bright, shiny, and toxin-free our homes are!

Missy painted this mural for her son while she still pregnant with him! The name will be added once he’s born.

Missy’s Experience:

“I tell everyone if you can color in a coloring book and stay in the lines, you can paint these murals. It took me about a month and a half to finish b/c I could only work on it one hour a day at the most during my daughter’s nap time. The room was actually hunter green originally, so I painted a white primer square on the wall and then painted the blue before I put the mural up and traced it. It seemed to work much easier. Once the blue was painted, I put the mural up and traced it and then painted the rest. I also made little pirate skulls for the border to go around the rest of the three walls. We love it and it will be something he can keep for a long time.”

One Crazy Mother Test Notes

Tub and Tile Cleaner: Everyone loved the smell (it’s not too overpowering for pregnant noses either). Didn’t tackle soap scum as some would have hoped, but did make the tile shine. Our moms liked the snazzy bottle design and shape. Overall: not earth shattering, but pleasing to the senses.

Little Bowl Blu Toilet Cleaner: This product worked wonders in the bowl. Toilets around America will never be the same. The shape of the bottle made for easy application. Overall: A+, move to the front of the class.

Glass Cleaner: Our moms appreciated the lack of streaks and the minty scent that can rarely be found in glass cleaners. This product did the job, all while being cute and simple to use. Overall: Average performance, but the scent left an overachiever’s impression.

All Purpose Cleaner: Our panel was divided on this topic. Some of the nozzles dripped all over hands creating not-so-happy mothers. Everyone agreed that the scent is delicious, but not when it’s worn as perfume. The product seems to get the job done, but some wondered if pink grapefruit smell was being spread all over their countertops in lieu of actual cleaning power. Overall: Pretty, but a bit of a slacker.

Will Smith and his actress wife Jada Pinkett Smith will open a private school in the fall focused on academics and the arts, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The school, New Village Academy, is slated to open this September at the Indian Hills High School campus in the Las Virgenes Unified School District.

In a statement, Will Smith said of the school: “About 10 years ago, Jada and I started dreaming about the possibility of creating an ideal educational environment, where children could feel happy, positive and excited about learning. . . .

“New Village Academy was born of a simple question, ‘Is it possible to create an educational environment in which children have fun learning?’ Jada and I believe the answer is ‘Yes.’ ”

New Village Academy began about three years ago as a home school for the Smiths’ youngest children — Jaden, 9 and Willow, 7 — and those of several other families. After an extensive search, Jacqueline Olivier, previously an administrator at private schools in Santa Monica and La Jolla, was hired to head the school…

The school, she said, will use many philosophies, including Montessori, Bruner and Gardner. Olivier said the Smiths would pay nearly $900,000 to lease the Indian Hills High School campus in the Las Virgenes Unified School District for three years. Fall enrollment is expected to be about 40 students and will eventually rise to about 100, she said. The school will include pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, with a top annual tuition of $12,500.

Being celebrities, the opening of their school is already mired in controversy. Among other media outlets, Fox News made a big deal that some of the teachers are Scientologists who will use teaching methods steeped in the religion. But Olivier said the teachers are of many religions, including Scientology, Christian and Muslim — although the school is secular.

I don’t get it. A big deal has been made about the Scientology, but what exactly would it look like in a classroom? The New Village curriculum sounds very rich, including literacy, math, “living skills,” Spanish, karate, yoga, robotics, technology, etiquette and art. “Parental involvement is encouraged, as is limited access to television and sugary foods,” according to the L.A. Times.

This doesn’t sound much different than a montessori, waldorf or any other private school for that matter. What do you think? Is critique of the Smiths’ new school warranted?

Moms and people who like them often call mothering the most important job in the world. I’m not sure. The claim is premised by the false assumption that horrible people come from bad parents- something we know not to be true.

There are stories all the time about great people who came from crappy situations and wastes of space that come from perfect suburbia.

I think we should change the phrase from “most important job in the world” to “most important collective job in the world.” When one mom runs away from her family it’s sad. If a whole city of moms ran away or just decided to screw it and not raise their babies, it would prove disastrous. Hence the “collective.”

I can think of many jobs, right off the top of my head, that I think are more important.

Would you rather have an air traffic controller fail while on the job, or the mom next door?

What about a surgeon operating on your heart? Would you rather have him fall into your open chest cavity or see a mom forget to pick up her kid at day camp?

I think we can agree that while motherhood is special and important, it is only the most collectively important job on Earth and there’s nothing wrong with that.
